Hints & Tips

  • Shiver Mode: Models 4 & 5, ghd straighteners have a built in safety feature called Shiver mode. When the plates are 8 degrees or less they may continuously beep . This is not a fault but a safety feature in case of the presence of condensation. To get them out of Shiver Mode, switch off and unplug. Hold the plates in your hands for a few minutes to warm them up, then try again. During the colder months store your ghd's wrapped in a towel.
  • Cables: We see many GHD's with very twisted cables. This is usually the result of wrapping the cable around your straighteners. Twisted cables can become faulty and even cause components on the circuit board to fail. Always store your GHD's with the cable looped as it was when new. Our 6 month guarantee will be void if cables are returned in a twisted state.
  • Generators and other sources of power: GHD's are sensitive to power fluctuations. Avoid using your GHD's if using a power source other than normal mains power. If traveling abroad always check that the mains supply is suitable for your electrical appliances.
  • Cleaning: Always wipe off traces of make-up or other hair products from the plates. It's easier to do this before the plates have completely cooled down.
  • Eclipse & Platinum : We can't repair the Eclipse model as there are no after market spare parts available. The same applies to the Platinum models. Please contact ghd directly for these models.
  • Fakes: Beware of fake ghds. There are plenty out there. There are very obvious signs that a set is fake. If purchasing from anywhere other than ghd directly first take a look at our fake guide. It is well documented that fake ghds are potentially very dangerous. We sell refurbished and guaranteed genuine ghds.
  • Extension leads: The use of extension leads are not recommended whilst using your ghds. Extension leads increase the risk of power surges that can damage the circuit board.
  • For ghd Air 1.0 hair dryers: Please do not attempt to open the dryer unless you have the correct tools. If the screws are damaged as a result of using the incorrect tools, then it is extremely difficult, sometimes impossible, to open without possible damage to the casing.
  • Dropped Hair Dryer: Should you accidentally drop your hair dryer, give it a shake before you switch it back on. Or if still running, switch it off immediately. If you hear parts or bits rattling around inside do not switch it back on. These broken parts will cause serious damage and more importantly can be a fire risk.

  • Always ensure that the rear filter of the hair dryer is refitted properly. The filter should also be regularly cleaned.
  • Travel: When travelling abroad, particularly to countries with different voltage from the UK (240V), for example the US (110V), it's important to know which models will or will not work. For ghd models from MK4 and above -  these are dual voltage and will work perfectly fine. However models MK3 and MK3.1b will not. ghd Hair dryers are not dual voltage so won't work. The exception is the ghd travel hair dryer. Trying to use any of the appliances not suited will result in damage.
